Friend of a Friend is pleased to present its inaugural exhibition DEEPER, a group show bringing together six Denver-based artists who participated in the artist-run gallery Yes Ma’am Projects’ Deep Crit program.
In February 2020, Yes Ma’am Projects initiated a critique program that was meant to foster high-level dialogue for Denver artists. Over the course of three weeks, artists Vinni Alfonso, Kate Gonda, Elena Gonzalez, Noah Schneiderman, Heather Schulte, and Allie Sutterer presented work from their current practice for non-hierarchical and constructive discussion. Deep Crit hoped to create a tight-knit community for emerging artists who could rely on each other for further criticism. As the program ended, the entire world shut down without any sense of where our personal or professional lives would direct.
After a full year of the pandemic, DEEPER is an exhibition that reconvenes this group of artists and asks them to look into the immeasurable thickness of time and practice. They have exposed their vulnerabilities through sculpture and painting and in one sense we see what they have been making and in another we let them know that whatever they have made is valid. As progress has been different for every person during the last year, DEEPER offers viewers the opportunity to celebrate human artistic endeavors once again and contemplate the possibilities of what we hope is a deeper and more open future.
